Gauchos vs. Cal and Stanford, Winter 1980

"Gaucho Greats !" is pleased to present this article by Chris Lincoln, Gaucho Great, and third from right, front row, in photo above.

"The Gauchos traveled by UCSB vans to Nor-Cal on a cold January Friday a.m. to swim two schools that weekend. First we stopped to swim Nort Thornton's Cal Bears in Berkeley late that afternoon and then swam Stanford in Palo Alto the next day, Saturday. Coach Gregg Wilson, Assistants Rob "Weeb" Webster and Lynne Cox drove the 18 swimmers. Quite a few of the guys were from Northern California, so many parents were on hand. Dinner Friday was hosted by Tim Glass' parents in the Bay area.

This was Winter of 1980. One of the only about 6 dual meets we had that season. Cal spanked us, except in sprints. with Bruce Stahl giving Joe Bottom a run for his money and our sprint free relay holding well to the Bears.

At Stanford, I think Stahl took the 50, Paul Smith the 100 Fly and the Sprint Relay. Distance Free, IM and Backstroke we did not fare so well.

That 1980 team swam to a top 20 (18th?) finish at NCAA due to Stahl and our sprint free (4x100) relay. The PCAA's (Big West) Champs in March were dominated by this team, as we won by one largest winning margins in all of Coach Wilson's seasons. This was also the same winter as the Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Olympics."
