Gauchos vs. Cal and Stanford, Winter 1980

(Photo above shows the '79-'80 Gaucho varsity swim team photo at Stanford on the team trip discussed herein. Photo courtesy of Paul Smith).

"Gaucho Greats !" is pleased to present this article by Chris Lincoln, Gaucho Great, and third from right, front row, in photo above.

"The Gauchos traveled by UCSB vans to Nor-Cal on a cold January Friday a.m. to swim two schools that weekend. First we stopped to swim Nort Thornton's Cal Bears in Berkeley late that afternoon and then swam Stanford in Palo Alto the next day, Saturday. Coach Gregg Wilson, Assistants Rob "Weeb" Webster and Lynne Cox drove the 18 swimmers. Quite a few of the guys were from Northern California, so many parents were on hand. Dinner Friday was hosted by Tim Glass' parents in the Bay area.

This was Winter of 1980. One of the only about 6 dual meets we had that season. Cal spanked us, except in sprints. with Bruce Stahl giving Joe Bottom a run for his money and our sprint free relay holding well to the Bears.

At Stanford, I think Stahl took the 50, Paul Smith the 100 Fly and the Sprint Relay. Distance Free, IM and Backstroke we did not fare so well.

That 1980 team swam to a top 20 (18th?) finish at NCAA due to Stahl and our sprint free (4x100) relay. The PCAA's (Big West) Champs in March were dominated by this team, as we won by one largest winning margins in all of Coach Wilson's seasons. This was also the same winter as the Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Olympics."

Robert Webster: The Quintessential Gaucho Great !

(Close-up Photo above shows "Uncle Weeb", our Team (Co-) Captain of the 1976-'77 UCSB Gauchos Men's Varsity Swim Team. That's Weeb in the middle, of course, with the long blond hair, moustache and beard. Photo by La Cumbre Photo, Copyright Matt Pfeffer 1977).

(Photo of Uncle Weeb, circa 1985 at Gaucho Great (Varsity Tennis), Todd Lincoln, brother of Gaucho Great, Chris Lincoln (Swimming), Los Altos, Calif. Photo by Will Maguire.)

Robert Webster, aka (Uncle) Weeb, aka "The Doctor". Truly a Gaucho Great who swam and played water polo at UCSB. Uncle Weeb was not only a good friend and confident, he was also our team leader and served as Co-Captain during Wilson Era Years 1 and 2 and 3 (1975-1978). These first two years the Men's Varsity Swim Team was affectionately nicknamed "F-Troop" by Uncle Weeb as a compliment to the rag tag group of rough and not so rough and tumble swimmers who swam for Wilson, esp. during Year One (1975-'76) when Gregg came in having had no opportunity to do any recruiting. In Year Two, the team exploded with Freshman Talent and it was Uncle Weeb who kept these talented freshmen swimmers in line. Among the hot shot freshman talent were High School All American Swimmers, Gary "Sky" King, John "Spanky" Dobrott, Alan "Alfalfa" Talbot and several others recruited by Gregg.

Weeb was a natural leader and took his role as Co-Captain very seriously, including the enforcement of table manners (see our companion blog, Go Gauchos, for more on that at

Weeb was also a guy who loved to make people laugh. And so it should come as no surprise that when we would be in the pool and swimming laps in the afternoon and the girl's team would arrive and we would have to slide over to share the pool, that Uncle Weeb upon seeing this bevy of beautiful girls, would shout out (the not then politically incorrect) "Wagons Hoh... !"... which was always guaranteed to bring a chuckle amongst our team. Honestly, I don't think the girls could hear him because his timing and pitch were just right for only our team to hear.

It was also in Year One during Hell Week, on New Year's Eve that I arrived at Co-Captain Keith Cruickshank's apartment on the first block of Sabado Tarde for our team's New Years Eve party at about 9 pm with the party having started at 8 pm. As I was walking in along the walkway on the side of the building where the party was taking place I see Carol helping Gregg presumably to their car and then home. I looked over at Weeb and said "What's up with Wilson ?" Weeb replies, "Two Beers! That's why they call him "Two Beers" Wilson." Gregg is happy to say the least and is ambulatory with Carol's smiling support. And thus the legend is true for all those who came thereafter only to hear of it rather than to witness it.

Weeb also served as Assistant Swim Coach for several years with Gregg Wilson during the early 1980's. He left us too early but his spirit, enthusiasm and leadership will always be remembered. Today, the UCSB Men's Varsity Swim Team recognizes Weeb's memory by awarding it's "Robert Webster Team Spirit Scholarship" to the swimmer who best exemplifies leadership and team spirit.

In the photograph above, Weeb is seen at the wedding reception of Gaucho Great, Todd Lincoln (Gaucho Varsity Tennis), and big brother of Gaucho Great Swimmer Alum, Chris Lincoln, held in Los Altos, Calif., circa 1985. In addition to his leadership role on our swim team, Weeb was a De Facto Brother of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity at UCSB where several of the Gaucho Men's Varsity Swimmers were active members, including Gary King, Alan Talbot, Art Verge, Matt Shieman and Will Maguire.

There is no doubt that Weeb is leading workouts in Heaven with his usual style and exuberance. God Speed Uncle Weeb ! Rest in peace, brother.

Gaucho Greats, The Sequel

They are all over the place. Gaucho Greats, that is. Photos are flying in, well, not exactly flying in, but more are being found as time goes by.

So let's get right to it. This blog is here to celebrate... woo hoo !!!.... the Gaucho Great: Her, Him, Us, and Them.

Photo below: Bruce Stahl and Arthur Verge. June 2008. Bruce, of course, is the Classic Textbook Specimen of the SPRINTER, as in World Recording Setting. Still a stud today. Arturo, of course, is the consummate Long Distance Freestyler... and in spite of the team effort it took back in the day, I still think it was his performance at PCAA's in 1977 that helped us beat San Diego State for Third Place in our first year back in League.

Michael "Newmie" Newman. July 2008. There I was on my way to work one morning and who do I see out on his bike after his morning workout..... livin' the hard life (see below).

Scraped from my email and Chris Lincoln's Blackberry (below) is a photo of his daughter, and future Gaucho Great, Kristie Lincoln, at a recent World Series game in Philly.

And in perhaps THE EVENT of this century to date, Arturo shows off his wedding band, having just tied the knot in May 2008. It just goes to show that there is someone for everybody..... Hey Now ! (editor's note: so why am I still single....)

Gaucho Greats "In the News"!

This past April 26, 2008, Gaucho Greats gathered at the Events Center on campus for the bi-annual UCSB Athletics Dept. Hall of Fame Induction. Being inducted that evening, in addition, to the 1967 NCAA winning Men's Varsity Swim Team, was a stud water polo player from the early 1980', Larry Mouchawar.

Numerous Gaucho Greats were in attendance. Lots of Water Polo players showed up to cheer Larry on, thus a testament to their own Gaucho Greatness !

Below are some photos of that auspicious gathering. Sit back and soak in the Gaucho Greatness !

Photo (below), Left to Right: Carol Wilson (Gregg's better half, of course), unidentified (sorry) Donn "Bernie" Bernstein, and Wils !

Photo: Bernie, Barbara Deutsch and Corky Barrett (below)

Photo: Of Photo of 1967 UCSB Varsity Swim Team NCAA Champs ! All GAUCHO GREATS, of course !

Photo (below): John "Spanky" Dobrott (Gaucho Great in both swimming and water polo and Captain of '79 NCAA Water Polo Championship Team) with Bernie. April 2008 at Gaucho Hall of Fame Awards.

Photo below: Two Gaucho Greats and Hall of Famers, Brooks Bennett (Water Polo) and Spank (same).

Photo below: Hall of Famer Gaucho Great Water Polo Players in their HOF Jackets !

Below, more Gaucho Greats and Hall of Fame NCAA Championship Water Polo Team from '79.

Below, Gregg Wilson, the Originator of the "Gaucho Great" Accolade with the undersigned from Wilson Years 1 and 2, Will Maguire. And "Yes", that is an officially licensed UCSB Class necktie I've got on, circa 1977.

Photo below of Gaucho Great, Chris Lincoln, upon his arrival in Qingdao, the host city in China for the Sailing Events, August 2008 of the Beijing Olympics, where Chris directed all of the sailing competitions in the employ of BOB (Beijing Olympic Broadcasting). Way to go Linc ! Only a Gaucho Great could pull off that kind of responsibility !

Photo below, also of Chris, aka "Little Linc" (his big brother, Todd, also a Gaucho Great at UCSB on the Varsity Tennis Team, is known as "Linc"). Here is Chris showing his Isla Vista bicycle training and skills along the cityscape of the Sailing Hub City of Qingdao.
